'Trashion' show to promote recycling

ROME, Ga. -- Berry College is gearing up for its annual Recycled Fashion Show and Plastic Bottle Sculpture Contest.

Both events will take place at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 12 in Berry's Krannert Ballroom. Tickets are $5 each or $15 per family; attendees may also donate a gently used winter coat for Rome Action Ministries in lieu of paying admission.

Children are invited to design outfits made of at least 75% recycled material and wear them on the fashion show's runway. Cash prizes will be given to the most creative outfits.

The fashion show is sponsored by Berry College Elementary and Middle School, Berry Student Government Association, Green Team and Students Against Violating the Earth (SAVE).

Berry student interns for fashion designer

Berry student interns for fashion designer

ROME, Ga. -- A Berry College student got the opportunity of a lifetime this summer: an internship with a nationally-known fashion designer.

Alabama native Sydney Hulebak spent her summer at Billy Reid's studio in Florence, not far from her hometown of Huntsville. Reid's designs have been described as "the modern approach to American work wear and cultured Southern dandyism."

"Personally, this is something I have always dreamt of doing. Ever since I can remember, I have wanted to work in fashion," said Hulebak, who is majoring in communications with a focus in public relations. "I came into college thinking that I wanted to be a fashion journalist, which I would still love to try, but really discovered that I love the hands-on process too much to not give it a shot."

Hulebak added that she applied for the internship on a whim, never believing that she would get it.

Rome Visitor Center hosts vintage hat exhibit

Rome Visitor Center hosts vintage hat exhibit

ROME, Ga. -- In the spirit of the upcoming Steeplechase festivities, the Rome-Floyd Visitor Center and Last Stop Gift Shop are hosting an exhibit showcasing vintage hats.

The handmade hats are from longtime Rome resident Pauline Ware Neal's personal collection. They now belong to the Chieftains Museum and Major Ridge Home.

The ten hats were all made circa 1940 by a variety of millners.

The hat collection can be viewed all week at the Visitor Center, which is open Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
