Top junior golfers to compete in Rome Classic

ROME, Ga. -- Coosa County Club in Rome will welcome the nation's top junior golfers for the 12th consecutive year to the Burgett H. Mooney, Jr. Rome Classic in June.

Staged by the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA), the 96-player tournament field includes juniors from 10 states and the District of Columbia, as well as players from Canada, Mexico and Venezuela.

The field boasts 45 golfers from Georgia.

The Classic will be held Monday, June 13 through Thursday, June 16. Coosa Country Club is located at 110 Branham Avenue in Rome.

Highlighting the Boys Division this year is Patrick Grahek. The high school senior from Alpharetta, who has signed a National Letter of Intent with the University of Notre Dame, took second place at the 2010 W. Duncan MacMillan Classic at Rush Creek in Maple Grove, Minn.

ROME, Ga. -- Berry College has achieved its goal of raising $32.5 million to create the Steven J. Cage Athletic and Recreation Center.

President Steve Briggs made the announcement at Berry's recent Alumni Weekend gala, officially closing a six-year fundraising effort launched by a $10 million gift from Indianapolis entrepreneur Steve Cage.

Cage's donation was the largest in Berry history.

Numerous other alumni, friends and members of the campus community provided steady support for the project in the years since. The Board of Trustees brought the project to completion at its May meeting.

"Our Board of Trustees, including Steve Cage, provided tremendous support throughout the campaign," Briggs said. "And in true leadership fashion, our chair and vice chair took us over the top.

Cobb County is home to four indoor aquatic centers and two outdoor seasonal pools. The outdoor pools usually open, soon, after Memorial Day and the indoor pools are open year-round. Daily passes can be purchased from $3.30 and monthly passes can be purchased for $18.00.

Rome High senior named Soccer Player of the Year

Rome High senior named Soccer Player of the Year

ROME, Ga. -- A senior student-athlete at Rome High School has been named the 2010-2011 Gatorade Georgia Boys Soccer Player of the Year.

John "Snoopy" Davidson is the first Rome High student to receive the honor.

Soccer Player of the Year is an award that recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field.

The 6'1" Davidson is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Soccer Player of the Year. The winner will be announced later this month.

Davidson recorded 28 goals and 12 assists this past season, leading the Rome Wolves (12-5) to the Class 4A state tournament.

The 2010 Rome News Tribune Player of the Year, Davidson is a three-time All-Area selection.
