Unemployment rate didn't change in December

(WXIA) -- Metro Atlanta's unemployment rate went unchanged last month. The rate was 6.4 in December 2014, the same as it was in November 2014. It was 6.8 percent in December 2013.

Floyd County's December unemployment rate was 6.8 percent.

While the unemployment rate didn't budge, the Atlanta area gained 64,700 jobs last year, the largest December-to-December job growth in nearly 10 years. Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said many of the new positions were in trade and transportation; business services; leisure and hospitality; financial services; manufacturing; education and health care; government; and construction.

Butler said Georgia has been in the top 10 states for job creation every month since October 2012.

Metro Athens had Georgia's lowest December unemployment rate, at 4.9 percent. The Heart of Georgia-Altamaha region had the highest, at 8.8 percent.

Elderly couple shot to death in Floyd County

ROME, Ga. – Law enforcement authorities in Floyd County are trying to piece together the deaths of two people in a home on Terhume Road on Friday.

James Steven Reeves, 69, and 71-year-old Myra Wilson Reeves were found shot to death in the home at about 3:10 p.m.

Rome Police Officer Jerome Poole says that while this is being considered a homicide, there is not an active search in the area for a shooter.

Neighbors in the mostly rural area near the home where the deaths took place said they learned of the incident from the news, not from local police. The neighbors said they were not warned of any danger in the area, despite no arrests having been made in the case.

Investigators from the Floyd County Police Department have been searching for evidence from inside the home. They have also been working with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation on the case.

ROME, Ga. -- The Berry College Eagles are starting a new generation, and cameras are streaming it all live.

On January 5th, the eagles were still building up their nests. That night, around 5:00, the first egg of 2015 appeared. By Jan. 12, another egg was visible.

It's become a tradition for the North Georgia college town to carefully follow the eagle family's progress with thousands of others around the world watching on three live eagle cameras.
