Police chief: Elderly couple's death 'very personal'

ROME, Ga. -- It's been 10 days since someone broke through the screen door of a rural home in Rome and shot an elderly couple to death.

On Monday, Floyd County Police Chief Bill Shiflett spoke one-on-one to 11Alive News about the double homicide investigation case that's produced few answers.

Shiflett says the victims are close family friends. In fact, Shiflett says one of them is the sister of his best friend.

"It's really sad to go to a scene like that, knowing the victim," Shiflett said.

He was one of the first at the crime scene along Terhune Road on Jan. 23. A neighbor noticed the screen door was broken. When the neighbor checked inside he found 69-year-old James Reeves and 71-year-old Myra Reeves shot to death. That's when he called 911.
