Weekend roadwork: The usual suspects

(WXIA) -- It's going to be "more of the same" on the Atlanta area's highways and interstates this weekend, as Georgia Department of Transportation crews take to the streets.

Drivers are asked to avoid travel on interstates 20 and 285, if possible. GDOT will close lanes in several areas, which could result in lengthy delays.

As always, all work is weather permitting.

Interstate 20

Three eastbound lanes will be closed between Langhorn and McDaniel streets from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for bridge joint repairs.

Two westbound lanes will be closed between the Downtown Connector and Langhorn Street from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for bridge joint repairs.

Two westbound lanes will be closed between Fulton Industrial Boulevard and I-285 from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for bridge joint repairs.

Authorities catch Floyd Co. murder suspect


ROME, GA (WXIA) -- Wednesday evening, authorities apprehended a 27-year-old Floyd County murder suspect Wednesday evening, along with a 19-year-old woman they were looking for.

Stevie Lamar Garner was arrested after members of the US Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force were able to track Garner to a Silver Creek residence. Members of the task force, along with officers from the Floyd County Sheriff's Office and the Floyd Count Police Department were able to take him into custody without incident.

They were also able to locate Barbara Maegan Witt and take her into custody. She had been reported missing on Tuesday, and was believed to be with Garner.

Man dies after struggle with Floyd County Police


FLOYD COUNTY, Ga. – The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is taking over the investigation of a man who died after an struggle with Floyd County Police.

According to the Floyd County Police Department, Askari Roberts, 35, died after being subdued by officers.

Around 9:30 p.m. Monday, Ella Roberts called 911 to report that Askari Roberts was being held down by his 64-year-old father, Jackie Roberts, in order to "keep him from hurting them."

Police looking for woman thought to be with murder suspect


ROME, GA -- Police are asking for help from the public in locating a 19-year-old woman who they said may be in the company of a 27-year-old murder suspect.

Barbara Maegan Witt is described as a white female, 5-feet-4-inches in height, and weighing about 115 pounds. Witt's mother believes she is with 27-year-old murder suspect Stevie Lamar Garner. Garner is wanted for the March 14 shooting death of 21-year-old Patrick Wall.

Floyd County Police said they, along with Georgia State Patrol troopers responded to an accident Saturday evening just before 7 p.m. on Drummond Drive in Rome. When they arrived, they found Wall, the driver of the vehicle, had been shot. Wall was transported to Floyd Medical Center, where he died.

Investigators said they were searching for Garner in connection with the shooting.

Suspect sought in Floyd County murder


FLOYD COUNTY, Ga. -- Police are searching for a suspect after a 21-year-old Rome man was fatally shot.

According to the Floyd County Police Department, Floyd County police officers and Georgia State Patrol troopers responded to an accident on Drummond Drive just before 7 p.m. Saturday.

Upon arrival, first-responders discovered that the driver of the vehicle had been shot. He was transported to Floyd Medical Center, where he died. He was identified as 21-year-old Patrick Marcus Wall.

Police are searching for 27-year-old Stevie Lamar Garner in connection with the murder.

Area unemployment rate climbs in January

(WXIA) -- Metro Atlanta's unemployment rate climbed to 6.2 percent in January.

That's up from December's 6.0 percent, but considerably lower than the 7.1 percent in January 2014.

Floyd County's unemployment rate was 7.1 percent this January.

Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said the rate increased because of the loss of about 35,100 jobs, mostly seasonal positions.

But the Atlanta area had the largest January-to-January job growth ever recorded, adding 104,400 jobs over the course of the year.

The metropolitan Atlanta area consists of 29 counties, including the recently added Morgan County.

Metro Gainesville had January's lowest jobless rate, at 5.2 percent. The Heart of Georgia-Altamaha region had the highest, at 8.3 percent.

Several surface streets impacted by weekend roadwork

(WXIA) -- Interstate 20 will bear the brunt of this weekend's roadwork, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Drivers are asked to avoid nonessential travel on I-20, as road projects will require lane closures that will likely result in delays.

A number of surface streets will also be impacted by construction crews.

Cobb/Fulton counties: I-285
2 northbound lanes will be closed between Bolton and South Atlanta roads from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for concrete rehabilitation.

Coweta County: I-85
1 southbound lane will be closed at Sharpsburg-McCullum Road from 9 p.m. Friday to 12 p.m. Monday for barrier wall installation.
