'Doctor Who' anniversary special showing in 3D at Metro Atlanta theaters

(WXIA) -- The BBC has announced special 3D movie theater showings of the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special concurrently with showings at theaters around the world on  Monday, November 25.

The television version of the special will also be carried simultaneously on the BBC and BBC affiliate networks around the world on November 23.

Doctor Who is the longest-running science fiction program on television and is among the longest-running television programs of all time. The program first aired on November 23, 1963, and has aired around the world, and currently airs on BBC America in the United States.

The show features a time and space-traveling alien known as The Doctor, and has been played by 11 actors over the past 50 years. The most recent version has been played by Matt Smith, who is set to relinquish the role in December to the next iteration -- to be played by Peter Capaldi.

The special big-screen presentation will be shown in 3D at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, November 25.

The anniversary special, titled "The Day of the Doctor" stars Smith as The Doctor, and David Tennant as The Doctor's prior incarnation. The special co-stars Jenna Coleman, Billie Piper and John Hurt. The theatrical version of the special will include special introductions and a ten-minute featurette immediately following the special.
