Berry alumnus to showcase artwork

ROME, Ga. -- A Berry College graduate will show off some of his artwork at the school's Moon Gallery.

Richard Scott's exhibit, Selected Paintings 2011-2012, includes acrylic paintings and mixed media works on canvas and denim.

His showcase will be Monday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

For 25 years, Scott was owner and operator of Rome-based C. & S. Trophy Shop, which specializes in custom trophies and awards.

Berry to host Trumpet Festival of the Southeast

ROME, Ga. -- The Berry College Music Program will host a music festival in Rome later this month.

The 2013 Trumpet Festival of the Southeast will be at the college Jan. 18-20.

"We are honored to host the 2013 Trumpet Festival of the Southeast this year at Berry College," assistant music professor Adam Hayes said in a statement. "Most importantly, we are delighted to carry on this annual celebration of great music-making. I am excited to share our beautiful campus and our great support of the arts with trumpet enthusiasts from around the country."

The annual trumpeters' conference consists of performances, master classes and exhibits. Registration is $40 and is required to participate in classes and exhibits.

Hayes said about 300 to 400 attendees are expected at this year's festival, including representatives from Belmont University, Vanderbilt University and the University of Georgia.

NAIA FanZONE coming to Rome

NAIA FanZONE coming to Rome

ROME, Ga. -- The FanZONE, a street party held prior to this week's NAIA Football National Championship, will treat game attendees to some fun before the main event.

The FanZONE will provide music, games, food, a photo booth and even an outdoor Wii competition from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13.

This year's NAIA Football National Championship will pit Morningside College against Marian College at the Historic Barron Stadium in downtown Rome. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

The FanZONE is sponsored by the Greater Rome Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Christmas play to benefit St. Jude

Christmas play to benefit St. Jude

ROME, Ga. -- The Berry College Theatre Company's annual Christmas show, Uh Oh, Here Comes Christmas, opens Thursday.

According to information from the college, the play "takes a funny, heartwarming and often poignant look at the struggle to find the spirit of the holidays amid the avalanche of commercialism, stress and chaos that crashes down every December."

Shows are at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 6-8 with 2 p.m. matinee performances on Saturday, Dec. 8 and Sunday, Dec. 9.

Admission is free with a donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. For attendees who choose not to donate, admission is $10, or $15 for a ticket and a catered dessert.

Capture the Christmas spirit with Candles & Carols

ROME, Ga. -- Oak Hill & the Martha Berry Museum will host a Candles & Carols Christmas event next week.

In honor of the holiday season, Oak Hill -- home to Berry College founder Martha Berry -- has been decorated from top to bottom. Visitors are invited to mingle, meet Santa Claus and enjoy free cider, cookies and hot chocolate.

Community choirs will fill the air with music, and the Berry College Theatre Company will be on hand to give a sneak preview of Uh-Oh -- Here Comes Christmas, a production that raises money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Admission to Candles & Carols is $5 for adults and $2 for children and students. It will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. from Nov. 29 to Dec. 1.

Belk santafest to spread holiday cheer

ATLANTA -- Belk department stores will host their first-ever santafest holiday celebration on Saturday, Dec. 1.

All santafests will be held from noon to 3 p.m.

Highlights include crafts, family-friend activities, Christmas treats and, of course, the chance to meet Santa Claus. Participants can enter a drawing to win a $50 kids wardrobe; three winners will be chosen from each Belk store.

'Trashion' show to promote recycling

'Trashion' show to promote recycling

ROME, Ga. -- Berry College is gearing up for its annual Recycled Fashion Show and Plastic Bottle Sculpture Contest.

Both events will take place at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 12 in Berry's Krannert Ballroom. Tickets are $5 each or $15 per family; attendees may also donate a gently used winter coat for Rome Action Ministries in lieu of paying admission.

Children are invited to design outfits made of at least 75% recycled material and wear them on the fashion show's runway. Cash prizes will be given to the most creative outfits.

The fashion show is sponsored by Berry College Elementary and Middle School, Berry Student Government Association, Green Team and Students Against Violating the Earth (SAVE).
