This year Essence magazine joins forces with Steve Harvey to make Disney’s Dreamers Academy the biggest, brightest and most mind-blowing event yet! The selected attendees will be encouraged to pursue their dreams by highly successful Disney mentors, celebrities, innovators and creators. They will work side-by-side and hand-in-hand with entertainers, culinary artists, financial wizards and magic makers – all have stories to tell and learning experiences to share.

Floyd County Animal Control Volunteer Program Suspended

ROME, GA -- Due to unfortunate circumstances, the Floyd County Animal Control volunteer program has been suspended indefinitely.

Animal Control will continue to facilitate the rescue of unwanted animals through the 52 pre-approved rescue groups currently registered with them, as well as accept new rescue organizations that qualify.

For the past 10 months, Floyd County has attempted to minimize the euthanizations of unwanted animals by working with volunteers at the shelter to facilitate more rescues.

Rome Dedicates Labyrinth

ROME, GA -- On Monday, Nov. 1, the City of Rome will officially dedicate its new labyrinth inside the Jackson Hill amphitheater.

The dedication and an All Saints Day celebration will begin at 4:30 p.m. The amphitheater is located on Civic Center Drive, just beyond the Rome Visitors Center.

Arby's Restaurants Reopen

ROME, GA -- Rome residents can once again enjoy roast beef sandwiches, curly fries and Jamocha shakes. On Friday, Oct. 22, three Arby's restaurants officially reopened to the public.

Magnolia Foundation to Benefit from Gran Fondo, Over the Moon

ROME, GA -- On Saturday, Oct. 23, Harvest Moon Café (234 Broad Street, Rome, 30161) will host Over the Moon, a microbrew and Southern cuisine pairing, to benefit the Magnolia Foundation.

Over the Moon is held in conjunction with the 2010 Rome Gran Fondo, a mass cycling event that is popular in Europe and coming to the Southeastern United States for the first time. The Gran Fondo will take place on Sunday, Oct.

Chiaha Harvest Fair Returns to Rome

ROME, GA -- The weather is cooling, the leaves are changing and the Chiaha Harvest Fair is just around the corner.

The 46th annual Chiaha Harvest Fair will be held on Saturday, Oct. 23 and Sunday, Oct. 24 at Ridge Ferry Park (282 Riverside Parkway, Rome, 30161).

This family-friendly festival offers a variety of handmade arts and crafts by more than 120 artists from around the region. Artisans will demonstrate their crafts, including broom making, pottery and lampworking.

Top-notch musicians will perform on the MetroPCS Stage with local bands Jerry on the Moon and The Hip Knotics. Some returning favorites include Naked Blue, Ellen Cherry and Bryan Bowers.

Chiaha will once again offer some of the best fair food in the region, most of which is prepared by local cooks and restaurants.

John Wisdom Wagon Train Returns This Weekend

ROME, GA -- The John Wisdom Wagon Train & Trail Ride will return to Rome this weekend for the 31st year.

The ride commemorates the heroic ride of mail carrier John Wisdom. In 1863, he rode 11 hours on horseback from Gadsden to warn Rome of an impending attack during the Civil War. Because of his action, Rome was saved from early destruction.

The Wagon Train & Trail Ride will depart Ridge Ferry Park (282 Riverside Parkway, Rome, 30161) on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 8:30 a.m. The train of horses and wagons will travel to Shannon, Georgia. Tickets are $10, and Coggins papers must be shown in order to participate. (What are Coggins papers?)

The Wagon Train & Trail Ride returns to Rome at 5:00 p.m. for a Grand Parade down Broad Street.

The day's celebration concludes with a Cowboy Dance at Ridge Ferry Park at 8:00 p.m. The band Running Wild will perform.
