Shorter University Senior Wins District Metropolitan Opera Title

ROME, GA -- Shorter University voice student Jasmine Habersham continued her winning streak when she was recently named a Georgia district-level winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council (MONC) Auditions Competition.

The senior from Lizella, Georgia was selected as a MET winner after performing a five-aria, four-language audition package. For her outstanding performance, Habersham received $1,000 and will advance to the Southeast regional auditions in February.

Habersham is a student of Shorter University music professor Dr. Matthew Hoch.

"One cannot overstate how big of an honor it is to be a district winner of this competition, especially at the age of 21," said Dr. Hoch.

What are the Odds of Your Team Winning it All?

ATLANTA -- There are 20 teams that still have a shot at a state championship, but some teams are more likely to come away with a title than others. Ever wonder what the odds of your team winning it all would be? Thanks to the Massey Ratings, you don't have to wonder anymore.

According to the computer's calculations, Carrollton has a better shot at winning a championship than any other team, followed by Clinch County and Buford. Carrollton's opponent, Burke County, is considered the longest shot of any team in any classification.

Statistically, 5A is the most competitive class; all four teams have better than a 1 in 17 chance of winning a title.

Berry College Professor Awarded $25,000 NEA Grant

ROME, GA -- The National Endowment for the Arts has awarded a $25,000 grant to Berry College professor Sandra Meek for her poetry.

NEA officials recently gave away more than $1 million for 42 creative writing fellowships in poetry. Selected through an anonymous review process, the fellowships encourage the production of new works of literature by allowing writers the time and means to write. The creative writing fellowships alternate annually between poetry and prose.

This year, the NEA received 1,063 eligible applications; the 42 poets recommended each received a fellowship of $25,000.
