Memorial Day comes as troops fight in Afghanistan

ATLANTA -- Americans from Washington to California are marking Memorial Day with parades, barbecues and special tributes tied to the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

An annual holiday honoring the nation's war dead was infused with new meaning this year, coming just months before the 10-year anniversary.

Memorial Day celebrants began filing into Marietta National Cemetery early this morning. As the noon commemoration approached, members of the Patriot Guard Riders lined the driveway, welcoming everyone to the event.

Governor Nathan Deal made an appearance, giving thanks to the brave men and women who have fought in every major U.S. conflict, from the American Revolution to the War in Iraq.

ADOPT A PET: Meet Serena

ADOPT A PET: Meet Serena

MARIETTA, Ga. – If you dream of coming home to a cool purr or a comforting meow adopt a kitten from your local pet shelter. According to the ASPCA, approximately 5 million to 7 million domesticated animals enter animal shelters nationwide, every year, and approximately 3 million to 4 million are euthanized. However, you can change those numbers but adopting a “companion” for yourself or your family. Pets are an investment but, in our opinion, an investment well worth the money.

Serena is an adult, female, domestic short-haired cat. Serena is a pretty social cat who recently had a litter of kittens. According to the Humane Society, only one kitten survived and it was quickly adopted after birth. Since her kitten was adopted, Serena has been awaiting adoption and according to Humane Society personnel, she’s ready for adoption.

Prevent the dreaded Memorial Day hangover

Prevent the dreaded Memorial Day hangover

ATLANTA - When a Memorial Day weekend's forecast includes sunny skies and highs in the upper 80s - 9s on the WIZometer - there's a good bet people will be spending a lot of time outside.

And when people spend a lot of time out by the pool or on the lake, there's probably alcohol around.

Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol can have devastating consequences. So, it's always a good policy to drink responsibly, assign a designated driver and keep things safe when you're drinking.

But, as anybody who's had a little too much to drink will tell you, the dreaded hangover is the most common consequence of over-drinking.

LOCAL PROFILE: The LGBT Community in Atlanta

LOCAL PROFILE: The LGBT Community in Atlanta

ATLANTA -- According to The Advocate, the U.S. based national gay and lesbian newsmagazine, Atlanta holds the title of “America’s gayest city” and Gay Atlanta, a subsidiary of the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau says that Atlanta is the “epicenter of the LGBT South” but according to Phillip Rafshoon of Outwrite Bookstore, Atlanta is just a “progressive city in a conservative state, that’s in a conservative region of the United States. The city serves as a place where people from small, southern towns can come to be who they want to be” which is why the LGBT community loves to call this city, home.

In the nook that is Tenth Street and Piedmont Road, Outwrite Bookstore has been a staple in the Atlanta LGBT community for about 18 years.
